Photobiomodulation
(Red Light) Therapy
Light is essential for life
The Science Behind Light Therapy Beds
Light is essential to all living things. For centuries we have known the healing power of sunlight. In the past few decades, scientists have been harnessing the light most beneficial for healing and creating new technology to administer this healing light through various devices.
Perhaps the most impressive to date is the invention of the LIGHT BED.
Some call it a time machine, others the fountain of youth. Others just call it “magic” but it is all based on science!
LED Light Beds
Light Beds using Red Light and other wavelengths, are becoming more commonly used by professional sport teams, and at pain and wellness clinics as a safe, highly effective, non-invasive treatment with no side effects.
What is Photobiomodulation (PBM)?
Light Beds use a revolutionary healing technology called Photobiomodulation (PBM). Also known as Low Level Laser Therapy or Red Light Therapy, Photobiomodulation therapy emits light photons through Lasers (very low intensity) or LED’s (Light Emitting Diodes) at specific wavelengths and doses. These wavelengths and doses have been scientifically proven to yield the best results.
Many Health Benefits
Along with anti-aging and injury repair, Light Beds are very effective for ACUTE & CHRONIC PAIN. Many people are avoiding surgery and the use of addictive pharmaceutical drugs. Others are getting off opioids after years of use with life changing results. PBM light therapy is providing a safe, natural, revolutionary approach to ending pain for good – not just masking it!
Backed by Decades of Science
There are now over 4000+ clinical trials, 500+ Randomized Controlled Trials and thousands of scientific papers written over the past 40 years on Photobiomodulation (Low-Level Light Therapy) and they all demonstrate the same thing. Photobiomodulation therapy helps with many conditions and diseases, from skin, to body, to brain in a natural and non-invasive way.

So how does PBM work?
The Light Spectrum

To understand light therapy, we first have to look at the light spectrum. Light is measured in nanometers (nm), which represents the wavelength of light, or the band of light energy. There are both visible and invisible light types, depending on the nm. The visible light spectrum includes the rainbow of colours we see due to the wavelength of light that is reflected off objects. A typical human eye will respond to wavelengths from about 380 to about 780 nanometers. Visible light is sandwiched between the invisible ultraviolet (UV) and near-infrared light (NIR).

The different wavelengths of light have different effects on the physical body. We know that UV light leads to Vitamin D synthesis but also to skin damage if we get too much of it. You have likely heard of far infrared’s detoxing effects on the body (like in infrared saunas that heat your body temperature and cause perspiration). Hospitals have been using blue light to treat jaundiced babies since its discovery in the 1950’s. This means, that we can use different types of light intentionally based on our purpose – this is Light Therapy. Photobiomodulation (discovered in Hungary in 1967) uses the wavelengths of light proven to have healing effects on your cells usually in the red and near infrared spectrum (625 to 1200 nm range). The higher the wavelength, the further it can penetrate into the body. Green and yellow light are mainly used for skin (anti-aging and repair) and red and near infrared can penetrate past the skin layers to muscles and bones (see chart).
Healing effects of PBM

Light photons from the red and near infrared (NIR) spectrum have a healing effect on the body by reacting to an enzyme in the cell’s mitochondria called cytochrome c-oxidase.
Our bodies run on energy called adenosine triphosphate (ATP) produced by the mitochondria of each of our cells. ATP is an energy-carrying molecule found in the cells of all living things. Mitochondria are known as the powerhouses of the cell and are essential to life. When our cells become damaged, nitric oxide builds up and oxidative stress (inflammation) is produced blocking essential oxygen from getting into the mitochondria to produce energy.
Photobiomodulation works like a SUPER ANTIOXIDANT. Light photons go directly to damaged cells to release the NO and oxidative stress build up. This allows oxygen to reach the mitochondria to produce ATP at optimal levels again.
This process ignites a chain reaction of healing processes that serve to:
- Reduce cellular inflammation
(Displacing oxidative stress) - Increase cellular energy (ATP)
- Improve blood flow (Releases NO)
- Stimulate healing & tissue repair (Activating ROS)

How does PBM successfully treat so many different conditions?
Photobiomodulation therapy does one thing very well. It reduces Oxidative Stress at the cellular level.
So what does this mean? Any health condition that has anything to do with INFLAMMATION, will respond to this treatment.
What is oxidative stress?
Oxidative Stress is an imbalance between free radicals (also known as Reactive Oxygen Species or ROS) and antioxidants in your body. Free radicals are natural and necessary to cell function but are dangerous once they are no longer in balance. Antioxidants keep free radicals in check. Antioxidants are molecules in cells that prevent free radicals from taking electrons and causing damage.

Although inflammation is a natural response to injury, chronic inflammation can cause pain, swelling, stiffness, and cell and tissue damage and is at the root of most health conditions. Time Magazine calls Inflammation “The Silent Killer” after medical studies linked chronic inflammation to many serious illnesses including Alzheimer’s, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Diabetes, Fibromyalgia, Cancer, heart and lung disease and more.

No matter your age or state of health, PBM light therapy will help you become the best you can be!
